This tranquil hostel is set in 15 acres of private grounds nestling in the peaceful western fells, amongst a landscape of woods, rivers, rugged hills and sheep.
YHA Eskdale is on the doorstep of the highest and most challenging Lakeland peaks such as Scafell but is also ideal for delightful riverside and woodland walks.
YHA Eskdale is an environmentally friendly hostel and uses renewable energy.
The hostel has extensive woodland grounds to the side and rear. The woodlands hide a fully mapped out nature trail, a solar garden, wildlife pond, secluded nature hide, outdoor classroom and even a replica Celtic roundhouse with an outdoor oven. The hostel offers activities to school parties including archery, an archaeological dig, timeline activities, writing postcards in Latin, learning about Celtic life in the replica roundhouse and our very special Roman banquet. It's a one and a half mile walk to the Hardknott Roman Fort and local attractions include L'aal Ratty, Eskdale's narrow gauge steam railway, Eskdale Mill - the oldest working corn mill in England, and Stanley Ghyll waterfalls.
Volunteering with YHA is a fantastic way to have fun, learn new skills, boost your CV and travel to different places. We have a variety of different opportunities to choose from and volunteering roles to suit everyone.
The tasks are varied and in return you will meet some great people, who both work and stay in our hostels, as well as enjoying your time off discovering the local area and attractions.
