Volunteer Manager - register your interest
Volunteer Managers provide a warm welcome to guests in several of our small self-catering hostels. Often in beautiful locations, Volunteer Managers enjoy the benefit of being able to explore the area in their free time. By supporting YHA in this way you can help keep these very special hostels open for everyone.
You will welcome a wide range of guests and have the satisfaction of knowing you have given them an enjoyable stay. The role involves customer care, daily housekeeping, administration, answering telephone queries and looking after the security of the hostel. Volunteer Managing can be hard work, but there are many rewards including spending your free time exploring the attractions of the local area and meeting some interesting like-minded people. All the volunteer-run hostels are self-catering.
We can offer to reimburse you up to £75 towards your travel costs to the hostel and accommodation is free of charge whilst you volunteer. We also offer up to £30 towards travel to the initial 2 day training course.
We welcome applications from couples or friends who would like to volunteer together. All volunteer opportunities are available for 1 or 2 people. Several of the hostels can also accommodate children/grandchildren in your accommodation so they can come too.
Hostels currently in the Volunteer Manager programme include:
Beverley Friary, Clun Mill, Coniston Coppermines, Coverack, Dalby Forest, Jordans, Kington, Litton Cheney, Lizard Point, Mankinholes, Newport, Poppit Sands, Pwll Deri, Rowen, Slaidburn, St Davids, Tanners Hatch, Thurlby, Tintagel and Wells next the Sea.
The recruitment process for this role involves a telephone interview, 2 satisfactory references, a Basic Disclosure check and completion of a two day training course. The first step is to register your interest by joining this opportunity. Telephone interviews take place in the summer and the training courses are held in the autumn/winter.

Me and my partner really enjoyed visiting Mankinholes as it such a different area we haven't thought of exploring, there are a lot of accessible walks and bike rides from the hostel, and a lovely cosy pub a short walk away. However, there was a lot more work involved that linked you to the hostel than we expected, even when you are not busy you have to man the reception desk from 5 - 9 due to the front door having to be left open. We would recommend that you arrive early as there is a lot of paperwork to find and handover notes to read, before you are thrown in at the deep end.
However, we did enjoy ourselves and liked meeting the varied people visiting the hostel, and would go back again.
