Hostel/Student placement - YHA Hawkshead (minimum placement of four weeks)
Come and volunteer at YHA Hawkshead. We are a hugely varied hostel, offering accommodation in dorm rooms, family rooms, pods, tipis, bell tents and camping. YHA Hawkshead is located in the South of the Lake District. Nearby you can find Grizedale Forest - which is great for mountain biking and exploring on foot, Hill Top Farm - the home of Beatrix Potter as well as plenty of beautiful surrounding countryside. There are also good bus links to other parts of the Lake District so you can travel to Ambleside or Grasmere during time off. The nearby village of Hawkshead has four pubs, a range of shops and a small supermarket.
Hostel placements are ideal for people needing to complete a student placement as part of their course or if you would like to simply lend a hand on a residential basis. Don't worry if you can't make the exact dates stated, please just apply anyway and we can discuss dates during the recruitment process.
You will be able to develop your skills, gain ‘real life’ work experience, as well as build some great memories and make new friends. Volunteering tasks include changing beds, cleaning rooms, washing showers, cleaning toilets, prepping and serving breakfast and evening meals. If you have a particular talent let us know and we might be able to incorporate this into your volunteering.
You can expect to volunteer for five days out of seven with two days off each week. This will include evenings, weekend and Bank Holiday working on a rota basis. In your free time you will be able to explore the local area.
Volunteers receive free accommodation in a private room, staff flat/house or a shared (single sex dormitory) room depending upon availability.
We offer up to £105 towards the cost of your travel to get to the hostel. Volunteers can purchase discounted meals for £2.50 per course or use our self-catering kitchen to prepare their own meals.
Please note that all hostel placements are on a voluntary (unpaid) basis and we do not enter into a contractual agreement with individuals or placing organisations. We recommend you purchase travel and medical insurance and you need the Right to Work in the UK.
Code of Conduct
We ask that you adhere to our volunteer Code of Conduct. We are committed to ensuring the safety of staff, customers and volunteers and will terminate any placement where an individual has breached UK law, is a risk to themselves or others or where they bring YHA in to disrepute.
YHA and Safeguarding
YHA is committed to ensuring the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all volunteers to share this commitment. The suitability of volunteers is assessed in line with this commitment.

Sue and Claire were very welcoming and made us a great thank you meal. I really enjoyed learning to decorate on a big-scale and it was very satisfying each time we finished a room, especially the large dorms! The working week was a great opportunity to meet other volunteers and to explore the area around Hawkshead which is lovely.
